Detects total fuel: gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, jet fuel, and other petroleum fuels in soil
This test detects total fuel product concentration, not differentiating between individual petroleum compounds. It responds to a select subset of fuel components, primarily aromatic and aliphatic compounds with less than fifteen carbons. It is not recommended for the detection of oils such as hydraulic or transformer oils.

Product Description
This method correctly identifies 95% of samples that are petroleum fuels-free and those containing 10 ppm gasoline and 15 ppm for other petroleum fuels. A sample that develops less color than the standard is interpreted as positive. It contains petroleum fuels. A sample that develops more color than the standard is interpreted as negative. It contains less than 10 ppm gasoline or 15 ppm other petroleum fuels.
How It Works
Standards, Samples, and color-change reagents are added to test tubes coated with a chemical specific to petroleum fuels. The concentration of petroleum fuel in an unknown Sample is determined by comparing its color intensity with that of a Standard.
Note: petroleum fuel concentration is inversely proportional to color intensity; the lighter the color development of the sample, the higher the concentration of petroleum fuel.
Assay Range
- 10 to 10,000 ppm gasoline 15 to 10,000 ppm diesel fuel
- Custom Detection Levels: One or two user specified detection levels are included with each kit, with additional levels available. Levels must be at
least 4x apart (i.e. 10 & 40 ppm not 10 & 30 ppm).
- Kit detection levels are based upon specific project action levels, and are specified by the user when ordering.
Sampling Time
- Dirt-to-Data in approximately 45 minutes.
Soil extraction time is typically 2 minutes per sample plus assay run time of approximately 30 minutes.
Test Kit Components
- 48 Antibody coated tubes
- 48 Conjugate tubes
- Substrates A, B and Stop solution reagents
- Petro standard
- Mechanical & repeater pipet tips
- Bulb transfer pipets
- Test Kit instructions
Storage & Precautions
- Shelf life is typically one year from date of manufacture, with lot specific kit expiration date information provided on product packaging.
- Storage at ambient temperature 64 to 81F (18 to 27C) is acceptable.
- Kits must be brought to 64 to 81F (18 to 27C) before use.
- Do not expose color solution to direct sunlight.
