Theres increasing evidence that surber-type samplers may seriously underestimate the invertebrate standing crops. Its easy to see why - deep water and loose stones can cause loss both above and beneath. Available for the first time from Wildlife Supply, the Ellis-Rutter combines the portability of the surber with the four-sided construction you need to prevent loss of organisms. Its polyfoam base conforms to a variety of substrates under most flow conditions. Aluminum and stainless steel construction provides a stable platform for maximum manipulation of the substrate. But the proof is in the pudding: in a study from a single riffle in East Branch Perkomen Creek in southeast Pennsylvania, the Ellis-Rutter collected over twice as many organisms and eleven more taxa than the surber!
